Hi, my name is
Wyatt Olsen.
I’m interested in learning the things I don’t know yet.
I study Finance and Risk Management & Insurance at the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business, by way of Kirkwood Community College. I read a lot, and what I read usually turns into something I build. I’m looking for an internship where I can put those skills to work and learn from experienced people.
About Me
I started at Kirkwood Community College, earned an Associate of Arts, and transferred to the University of Iowa to study Finance and Risk Management & Insurance.
My past jobs weren’t related to my degree, but they taught me how to work. Mess something up on the line at Big Grove Brewery and it comes back to you within minutes. On a CAMBUS route, forty people are assuming the person driving is paying attention. Both punish sloppiness fast, and both taught me to stay sharp, keep my work consistent, and hold myself to an output I can actually be proud of.
I bring that same mindset to my free time. I spend it building projects tied to finance and risk management, using them to sharpen the skills my degree is built on and to prepare for the next step in my career. I’d rather understand something for real than fake my way through it, so I treat being early in the field as a reason to stay curious.

Where I’ve Worked
Bus Driver @ CAMBUS
August 2026 - Present
- Drive fixed campus routes for the University of Iowa's student-run transit system, carrying students, staff, and community riders on a published schedule.
- A full bus in traffic, Iowa winters, construction detours, and game-day crowds. On time.
- Handle rider questions and the occasional difficult passenger without letting it knock the schedule sideways.
Things I’ve Built
This Site
The thing you're looking at. Built on Brittany Chiang's open-source v4 template by directing an AI through the customization: ripping out the blog, pinning down Gatsby's GraphQL schema so trimming content stops breaking the build, and fighting an OpenSSL error that only shows up on modern Node. I don't write Gatsby from memory. I can read it, tell when it's wrong, and say precisely what I want next — which is most of the job.
Applicant Risk Scoring & Rating Tool
Scores applicants on the inputs an underwriter actually uses — debt-to-income, credit history, income stability — and returns a risk rating. The part I care about is the layer on top: an LLM turns every score into a plain-language justification, because a rating with no reasoning attached is useless to a broker or an auditor.
Second Brain — AI-Maintained Research System
A 30+ page reference library on underwriting automation, risk modeling, fraud detection and insurance compliance, maintained by an LLM instead of by me. New sources get cross-referenced and checked against what's already there, so contradictions get flagged rather than quietly overwriting the older claim. It runs unattended every morning.
It also spent a while failing silently, because the source files were cloud placeholders that hadn't finished downloading when the job fired. Took me a few days to find that.
Automated Finance Briefing Pipeline
Ran every morning at 7 AM: pull finance and industry headlines from 18 publications, summarize them with Claude, archive the output, email it. Four platforms, eight modules, and one full re-architecture from a branching design to a linear chain to get around a data-isolation constraint.
Nine separate things broke before it was stable. One of them was me exposing an API key, which I caught and rotated. Currently rebuilding it in Python.
